The catalyst for composing this music was the need to find in sound, a direct response to what I had felt when visiting with a fascinating exhibition of Fang reliquary objects at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (the Fang, originally nomadic people, are from equatorial Africa).

A sonic expression that could speak to the myriad qualities and mystery these figures evoked in me. Music that could speak not only to serenity and balance but also to an alert watchfulness many of these figures possessed. Perhaps as a warning to the uninitiated of something incomprehensible and untameable that may arise from within.

The ancestors still demanding attention, echoing our own mortality and reminding us, the living, to be fully awake to what it is, that makes us so.
