SHADOWS OF SHOSTAKOVICH

desertrat07 I wasn't familiar with Shostakovich. Turns out I didn't need to be before diving into this excellent release. The longest tracks, to Spread and to Reflect, are perhaps the most sonically adventurous, while the pensive, searching sound of songs like to Journey take the listener to a place where the two musicians are clearly responding to each other in the moment with the utmost skill and attention. Valdes' playing is an electrifying tour de force, and Ware's concept is beautifully realized. ***** Favorite track: to reflect.

about

Shadows have a source, they come from light but appear as a darkness.

Shostakovich, as a creative presence in the landscape of 20th century music casts a long, deep and complex shadow. The circumstances of his life were not simple; the forces acting upon it not always clear and the meaning, content, impulses and references in his music were often, by necessity, oblique.

But what is clear is the power, vitality, depth and magnitude of his ideas; along with an absolute commitment and drive to create, despite the repressive suffocation of the Soviet political agenda under which he lived.

This light of inspiration is what I hope comes through the music on this recording. Having released one session inspired by the fugues I wanted to explore the other part of this picture - the preludes. Meeting Harvey was a chance encounter of the most magical and affirmative kind life can offer, when we listen.

I hope you enjoy listening to this album, as we did, to the music and spirit of Dmitri Shostakovich.

Edward Ware New York, New York

I moved from New Zealand to New York in 1990 looking for the stimulus and challenges of life in an artistic centre of international stature and reputation. My work is equally inspired by the influences of visual art, literature and poetry as it is by the sonic worlds of other composers.
I currently spend my time between NYC and Barcelona. More info. can be found at my web site.
